Her creative vision and natural talent allows her to bring every picture to life. Ever wonder how some photographers get amazing up close and personal shots of wild animals. The animals are not brought into a studio. They stay in their natural surroundings. One can capture the inner beauty and personality in every shot. "Life certainly hasn't been easy and I belive those struggles are what drives me the most", says Dawn. Dawn was diagnosed with have an Arnold Chiari Malformation of the Brain. She was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville FL where she went through extensive testing. It was later determined that surgery was critical. On January 10, 2006 emergency surgery was performed. SO WHAT IS ARNOLD CHIARI MALFORMATION OF THE BRAIN? Also known as Arnold-Chiari Malformation or ACM, this is an ucommon structural condition affecting the cerebellum. Essentially there is extra cerebellum crowding the outlet of the brainstem/spinal cord from the skull on its way to the spinal canal. This crowding will commonly lead to severe headaches, neck pain, loss of balance, tingling in the arms and/or legs, stiffness, and less often will cause problems such as chronic coughing, difficulties with swallowing, and choking. Often the symptoms are made worse with straining. Untreated, the chronic crowding of the brainstem and spinal cord can lead to very serious consequences including paralysis. In addition they can lead to the development of syrinxes which may further injure the patients spinal cord and function. When the diagnosis is suspected the study of choice is an MRI scan. These malformations are very difficult to see on CT scans and impossible to see on plain x-rays. There are many ways to treat Chiari malformations, but all require surgery. The basic operation is one of uncrowding the area at the base of the cerebellum where it is pushing against the brainstem and spinal cord. This is done by removing a portion of bone at the base of the skull deep to the neck muscles as well as often removing a part of the back of the first and occasionally additional spinal column segments. June 10, 2006 - It's been six months and I am doing well. You would think after having 1 inch of your skull removed and 3 vertibrae, I would be slow to recover. Although I am no where near as active as I had been, I feel very lucky for my surgery to have gone so well. I have had 2 MRI's since my surgery and the malformation has not grown. The only trouble I am having is some short term memory loss (ok maybe on purpose sometimes), a few minor headaches and my vision has slipped a bit (probably because I am about to turn 40). I still don't have feeling in the right side of my head. The doctor said I may never get that back ... or the nerves just may need more time. None the less, I am a survivor. In the next six months I will continue to monitor any lingering symptoms and chart the success of the surgery. Would I recommend surgery to anyone out there who is on the fence about it? If your symptoms are as severe as mine were, you can afford to go to the Mayo Clinic for testing first, you are prepared for the painful surgery and recovery and have a support team ... then yes ... BUT keep checking this site for any updates on my condition. Medicine is a mystery and no two people are alike. January 10, 2007. Today marks the 1 year anniversary of my surgery. For the past 3 months I have struggled with various symptoms including headaches, neck aches, speach problems (out of the blue, not being able to pronounce easy words), short term memory loss, sudden loss of balance, fatigue, sensitivity to lights driving at night (makes me so nautious I get sick), ringing in ears etc. I have pushed myself very hard at work and after a 10 hour day, all I can do when I get home is collapse in a chair or in bed. On the weekends, I am so exhausted from the week I just sleep. I had a complete physical and it was fine. My blood pressure and blood work-up was good. I have contacted the Mayo Clinic and requested the name of a Chiari specialist here in Atlanta so I don't have to drive back to Jacksonville. I am awaiting a call. I will keep everyone posted. May, 2007. What a month February was. I went back to the neurologist and ended up seeing a new Dr. He sent me for an MRI. It came back perfect. He decided to try some preventitive medicine. I am taking an anti-seizure/migraine medication called Topomax. It has given me back my life ! I have been symptom free while on the medication. The medication does have some strong side effects. My neck is still sore and I would love nothing more than a daily massage. I wake up every morning alive. I take nothing for granted. I love to love and love to be loved. I give to the world and expect nothing in return. To me, this is now life and nothing else really matters anymore ... I hope this is my last entry. Give one away today .... here's mine to you ! ~xoxo~ June 2008 I truly believe things happen for a reason. Just before my prior entry, I became a foster parent to 2 wonderful children. We were told it would only be perhaps 4-6 weeks we would have the children. It's now been 15 months. But wait, there's more ... their birth mother made a truly unselfish decision and asked us if we would adoped the children. It breaks my heart to think how she struggled with this, but knew deep down it was the best for the kids. We were never so excited as were the kids. We were a family. 4 weeks ago we were faced with a decision to take on their 13 month old baby sister. So many emotions came over us. I can photograph my emotions, but to put into words I can't explain. I asked God for a sign and within hours I had the exact sign I asked for. Angels in heaven must be looking over us and we now are a family of 5. This precious little baby is a pure joy and has stolen my heart. We are in the process of adopting all 3, otherwise they could have been seperated. Skies are blue, the rainbow is more colorful today and the sun shines no matter if it's out or not. Keep the faith, give of yourself and you will receive riches ... I have. December 2008 My headaches have been rough. I have had piercing pain in my head as well as numbness on my face. I went back to the neurologist and they doubled my medication. The side effects are like the beginning again and I am having a tough time getting used to the dosage. As for the success ... only time will tell. June 2011 I read "Heaven is For Real" recently about a little 4 year old boy that sees God in Heaven while recovering from surgery. All my symptoms are back, but life moves on. God is watching out for all of us. I will not let this defeat me. I have learned to accept what is thrown my way and find strength to move on despite how hard it is. Bea is my rock and always shows her love and support. Many have read my Chiari blogs and reached out. I can only say surgery is not a cure. Please do your research. Find good Doctors. Look for ways to keep the stress off you to minimize the pain. My migraines continue as does my vertigo. Memory loss, confusion, speach, hearing, muscle spasms etc are a double whammy because of the meds. The good news is my Chiari has not grown very much since my decompression surgery. MRI's are looking good! So, I focus on those who need me more. It keeps my minds off things and is a healthy way to live. I see a lot more rainbows these days since reading that book! October 2012 Last year I had a Hydro-Thermal Ablation (HTA). Didn't work. This June I had a Hysterectomy. Oh it did wonders for my headaches even though they weren't Chiari related. The pressure eased my Chiari symptoms minus the occasional vertigo. I felt so good in September I completely weaned myself off all meds. Except still not sleeping at night, a famous Chiari symptom, I am really doing well and feel great. Life through me a lemon so I chose not to just make a glass of lemonade, but open up a stand instead to serve all those thirsy for a sweet life! Until my next entry ... hugs!
